In een streng bewaakt complex wordt een groep kinderen onderzocht om een vaccin te vinden tegen een virus dat de hele wereld bedreigt. Het is de laatste hoop. Melanie van 10 jaar gaat elke dag naar school. Net als ieder meisje heeft ze een lievelingsvak en -leraar. Alleen wordt ze naar school gebracht in een dwangbuis en als ze haar op komen halen is het altijd met getrokken wapens. Melanie en haar klasgenoten zijn hybriden van de 2e generatie - deels 'Hongerig', deels menselijk. Maar in tegenstelling tot de 1e generatie 'Hongerigen' blinkt Melanie uit op school. Ze is pienter, zeer intelligent en houdt van haar favoriete lerares mevrouw Justineau. Als de basis overlopen wordt door 'Hongerigen' ontsnapt Melanie met mevrouw Justineau, sergeant Parks en Dr. Caldwell, die Melanie nodig heeft om een synthetisch vaccin te maken. Maar is Melanie de sleutel voor een vaccin tegen het virus dat de mens dreigt te vernietigen?
